Hybrid & Electric Car Maintenance & Servicing

There are very few independent garages in Scotland that are qualified and equipped to service and maintain electric and hybrid cars and vans, and even fewer who are members of HEVRA (Hybrid & Electric Vehicle Repair Alliance), a UK network of highly vetted and qualified independent garages. Cotly Garage is the only one in Blairgowrie and the wider area of Perthshire.

Stewart and Richard are qualified to IMI Level 4, meaning they are highly trained by the Institute of the Motor Industry to work safely on the high voltage system found in these modern vehicles, including EV batteries. Our workshop is fully equipped with all the specialist tools and equipment needed to keep your electric or hybrid vehicle and its battery running smoothly and reliably.

Customers, particularly those who’ve recently bought an electric or hybrid vehicle, have many questions. Here are the answers to a few of the most common ones:

What’s the Difference Between an Electric Vehicle & an Hybrid Vehicle?

A car or van described as a hybrid combines an electric motor that uses energy stored in a multi-cell battery, with an internal combustion engine. The electric battery in these vehicles is recharged by regenerative braking and use of the standard (internal combustion) engine.

An electric car or van only has a multi-cell battery and must be charged using an electric charge point between journeys.

Can Cotly Garage do all the maintenance on my electric or hybrid car?

Yes, we can carry out Class 1, 2, 4 & 7 MOTs, all levels of servicing, and any repair, on all makes and models, including electric and hybrid cars and vans.

How long does a battery last in an electric or hybrid vehicle?

Manufacturers generally expect these batteries to last between 8 and 10 years, however, it is important to note that they don’t just stop working. A little like the batteries in mobile phones, they gradually, over time, lose some of their charging power. Manufacturers such as Tesla, Nissan, and Renault state that they expect around 70% of the original range after as many as 300,000 miles.

Do you have a charge point for customers to use?

We don’t, but there are four in Blairgowrie, two of which are in the Tesco car park 200 yards from our workshop. Other charge points across the UK can be found here – there are over 42,000 in total and 4,000 of those are “rapid chargers”.
